LUSAKA - Citizens First President Harry Kalaba has called for a clear, transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya.
In a statement, Mr. Kalaba expressed condolences to Mr. Kafwaya's family, friends and all Zambians mourning his death, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident had raised serious questions across the country.
Mr. Kalaba said citizens deserve clarity, transparency and reassurance, and called on the relevant authorities to provide an independent account of the events leading to Mr. Kafwaya's death.
He questioned who authorised the security operation, what rules of engagement were applied, why lethal force was used and what information was provided to the public immediately after the incident.
Mr. Kalaba further called for the matter to be reported to the International Criminal Court, arguing that the seriousness of the circumstances and what he described as apparent weaknesses in domestic accountability mechanisms warranted international attention.
He also appealed to international and regional institutions to take an interest in the matter and support efforts aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
According to Mr. Kalaba, the family and the Zambian people deserve clear answers regarding the circumstances surrounding Mr. Kafwaya's death.
He urged citizens to remain peaceful, calm and united while seeking answers, saying Zambia's reputation for peace and stability must be protected by ensuring difficult situations are handled with truth, dignity, fairness and respect for every citizen.
Mr. Kalaba said Citizens First would continue to stand with Zambians in seeking truth, justice and accountability while protecting the country's democratic values.
He concluded by expressing his condolences and praying for the soul of Mr. Kafwaya to rest in eternal peace.
