LUSAKA - The Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema's concerns over the use of mobile phones by health workers during working hours, saying the discussion highlights the need for greater professionalism, accountability and quality service delivery in the country's health sector.
MQHZ Director General Dr. Quince Mwabu said healthcare professionals have a duty to give patients their full attention because they are entrusted with people's lives and wellbeing.
Dr. Mwabu said that while he supports efforts to strengthen discipline in health facilities, mobile phones have become valuable tools in modern healthcare when used responsibly.
He noted that mobile devices facilitate communication among healthcare teams, provide access to medical information and assist in coordinating patient care and clinical decision-making.
However, he emphasised that the focus should be on promoting the responsible and professional use of technology rather than imposing blanket restrictions.
Dr. Mwabu said healthcare workers must ensure that personal use of mobile phones does not interfere with patient care, stressing that patients deserve dignity, respect and quality healthcare whenever they visit health facilities.
He further called for stronger professional ethics, supervision and accountability across the health sector, stating that quality healthcare depends not only on medicines, equipment and infrastructure but also on the conduct, compassion and commitment of healthcare providers.
Dr. Mwabu commended President Hichilema for raising the issue and urged continued dialogue between Government, health institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen professionalism and restore public confidence in the healthcare system.
