LUSAKA - The Zambia Police Service has stepped up security operations nationwide ahead of Thursday’s General Election, deploying additional officers to polling stations and tallying centres to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba disclosed that the 2026 Electoral Security Plan has been finalised, with enhanced mobile patrols, crime detection operations and rapid response teams deployed across all ten provinces.
Mr Musamba said the measures are aimed at strengthening police visibility, improving response times and ensuring that every eligible voter can cast their ballot freely and without intimidation.
He assured the public that voters, candidates and election officials will be protected without fear, favour or political consideration.
The Police Chief said officers will act firmly and impartially against anyone committing electoral offences or disturbing public order.
He warned that unlawful assemblies, road blockages, destruction of property and attacks on individuals would attract immediate police intervention.
Increased patrols and snap security checkpoints will also be conducted on selected roads as part of preventive security measures.
Mr Musamba called on political leaders, candidates and their supporters to exercise tolerance and mutual respect, reminding political parties of their constitutional obligation under Article 60 to promote national unity and refrain from violence.
He noted that the campaign period has generally remained peaceful despite isolated incidents of political violence.
The Police Chief also cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified election results, rumours and speculative announcements on social media.
He stressed that only the Electoral Commission of Zambia is constitutionally mandated to declare election results and urged citizens to rely on official sources.
Mr Musamba further warned against hate speech, incitement, misinformation and disinformation online, stating that individuals who commit offences through digital platforms will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Zambia Police Service has also maintained engagement with political parties, civil society organisations, cooperating partners and observer missions as part of efforts to strengthen electoral security.
