Kawana Accuses Private Media Houses of Acting as Political Party Mouthpieces

LUSAKA - Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has accused some private media houses of abandoning professional journalism and operating as public relations platforms for political parties ahead of Zambia's August 13 General Election.

Addressing a media briefing, Mr. Kawana said media organisations have a responsibility to inform the public in a fair, balanced and professional manner rather than providing partisan coverage during the election period.

He urged journalists and media institutions to uphold ethical standards and maintain impartiality as the country heads towards the polls.

Mr. Kawana specifically alleged that Hot FM was being used as a propaganda platform for the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).

"We are aware, and the country may or may not be aware, that Hot FM is actually owned by Japhen Mwakalombe, who is the chairperson of the same NRPUP. I dare anyone to show me that they have paid for that airtime. It's nothing but a propaganda tool and the public relations unit for the same party," he said.

In response, Hot FM Chairman Oscar Chavula reacted in a Facebook post, writing:

"Good afternoon, Mr Kawana! Ichalo lishilu tabakaka weka..."

The exchange comes as concerns continue to be raised by various stakeholders over media coverage, political neutrality and the role of the media in the lead-up to next week's general election.
