LUSAKA - Government has accused opposition political parties of deliberately instigating acts of political violence in an attempt to create the impression that Zambia's 2026 General Election is being conducted in an atmosphere of widespread unrest.
Speaking during a joint media briefing with the Ministry of Information and Media, Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo said preliminary reviews of video footage from recent incidents indicate that some opposition supporters were responsible for provoking violence.
Mr. Matembo said Government was also aware of other alleged planned activities aimed at disrupting the electoral process and directed the Zambia Police Service to investigate all reported incidents promptly, regardless of those involved.
He said the Government remains committed to preserving peace before, during and after the August 13 General Election.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana alleged that Government had received information about planned acts of violence by members of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) in Southern, North-Western, and Western provinces.
Mr. Kawana claimed the alleged activities were intended to portray President Hakainde Hichilema negatively and warned that law enforcement agencies would take action against anyone found engaging in unlawful conduct.
In a related development, Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba has ordered a comprehensive review of the police crowd control and public order management operation conducted in Mongu and Kalabo during the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance campaign rally, where tear smoke was discharged.
Mr. Musamba said the review will examine both the conduct of police officers and political supporters to determine whether the operation complied with legal requirements and professional policing standards.
He also dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that a person died during the Mongu operation, stating that no death was recorded in connection with the incident.
The Inspector General further directed police commanders across the country to ensure that all individuals responsible for recent political violence in Shibuyunji, Livingstone, and Luampa districts are arrested and prosecuted without delay.
He reiterated that political affiliation would not shield anyone from criminal prosecution as Zambia prepares for next week's general election.
