Police Shoot Two Suspected Criminals Dead in Matero

LUSAKA - Two suspected criminals have been shot dead after allegedly attempting to free a suspect from police custody at SOS Police Post in Matero.

The incident occurred on Thursday night when four men reportedly stormed the police post and demanded the release of a suspect being held in custody.

According to Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the suspects were allegedly armed with machetes and knives.

Mr. Chilabi said the suspects attempted to seize a service firearm from a police officer, resulting in a struggle during which the officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding two of the suspects.

The remaining two suspects fled the scene and are currently being sought by police.

The deceased have been identified as Vincent Muwana, also known as "Bino," and Steven, also known as "Soldier," both of Matero.

Mr. Chilabi said the injured suspects were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the two men were wanted in connection with several criminal offences, including aggravated robbery, theft from motor vehicles and housebreaking in Matero and surrounding areas.

Police also believe the suspects were members of a criminal gang known as "Chipandule."

The suspects have further been linked to an aggravated robbery reported along Nguba Road on July 30, during which a 42-year-old man was allegedly shot and robbed of K40,000, an HP laptop and a SIG Sauer 9mm pistol.

Mr. Chilabi said the bodies have been taken to the UTH Mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while a manhunt has been launched for the two suspects who escaped.

He warned that anyone who attacks police officers, interferes with lawful police operations or attempts to free suspects from lawful custody will face the full force of the law.
