LUSAKA - The Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) has defended the right of students to support political leaders of their choice, rejecting claims that students have been turned into political cadres for the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
Speaking in an interview with Phoenix News, ZANASU President Innocent Nshindano said there is a clear distinction between personal and collective support, stressing that every student has the democratic right to choose which political party or leader to support.
Mr. Nshindano said while some students support President Hakainde Hichilema, others support opposition political parties, adding that students who choose to back the President should not be criticised for exercising their constitutional rights.
He stated that students naturally support leaders who respond to their concerns, noting that there is nothing wrong with supporting President Hichilema if they believe his administration is addressing issues affecting students.
Mr. Nshindano recalled that ZANASU openly challenged the government in 2019 when meal allowances for students were withdrawn, saying the union has consistently advocated for students' welfare regardless of which administration is in power.
He maintained that the union's position has always been guided by the interests of students rather than political affiliation.
