LUSAKA - The Chelstone Local Court has dissolved the marriage of a Lusaka couple after a police officer admitted to having an affair with the wife and was ordered to compensate the husband K10,000.
The court heard that Elisha Daka, 33, a married police officer from Ibex, admitted to having a relationship with Loveness Mulenga, 27, who was married to Jack Tembo, a 31-year-old nurse of Makeni Villa.
Daka told the court that Mulenga had informed him that Mr. Tembo was only the father of her child, leading him to believe she was not in a marital relationship.
He testified that the relationship continued for some time and apologised to Mr. Tembo in court, saying he would not have pursued the relationship had he known she was married.
Mr. Tembo told the court that he discovered the affair through Daka's wife and later confronted the police officer, who also apologised.
He asked the court to dissolve the marriage and order compensation for the breakdown of his marriage.
After hearing the matter, Chelstone Local Court Magistrate Charity Milambo granted the divorce, citing unfaithfulness and dishonesty within the marriage.
The court ordered Daka to compensate Mr. Tembo K10,000, beginning with an initial payment of K1,000 on August 30, followed by monthly instalments of K700 until the amount is fully paid.
Magistrate Milambo also ordered Mr. Tembo to pay K2,000 per month in child support for the couple's four-year-old son.
