LUSAKA - The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) is optimistic that ongoing El Nino preparedness measures will help reduce the impact of the anticipated drought.
ZNFU Executive Director Harad Lungu said it was encouraging that preparations aimed at mitigating the expected effects of the drought were already underway.
Speaking to Phoenix News, Mr. Lungu said lessons had been learnt from the previous El Nino-induced drought, with increased investment being made to build resilience and create a safety net for agricultural supplies from the current harvest.
He, however, cautioned that the anticipated drought remained a potential disaster beyond the direct control of the Government, making it necessary to implement as many mitigation measures as possible.
Meanwhile, National Union for Small Scale Farmers in Zambia (NUSFAZ) Secretary General Ebony Lolozhi urged farmers to exercise caution when selling their produce.
Mr. Lolozhi advised farmers not to sell all their harvest but to reserve some produce to help them cope with potentially difficult conditions in the months ahead.
