KITWE – Mopani Copper Mines Chief Executive Officer Eng. Charles Sakanya has praised firefighting brigades for their vital role in protecting lives, property and mining operations, saying their contribution is often overlooked until emergencies occur.
Eng. Sakanya made the remarks when a delegation from the Zambia Council of Chief Fire Officers (ZCCFO), led by Chairperson Robert Mumba Seulu, paid a courtesy call on him ahead of the Council's Annual General Meeting scheduled to take place at Nkana Golf Club.
He said firefighting services are indispensable to the mining industry, where hazardous operating conditions require a high level of preparedness and rapid emergency response.
According to Eng. Sakanya, effective fire services depend on well-trained personnel, reliable equipment and the ability to respond swiftly whenever lives and property are at risk.
"Your job is a critical job. The services you provide are critical, especially to the mining industry. It is a service that looks like it's not important until it's needed. It's similar to safety," Eng. Sakanya said.
He noted that safety remains a top priority in the mining sector because of the potentially dangerous conditions under which mining operations are conducted.
"Fire is one of those things that we need to prepare for. Thus, you have a noble cause, and you need to be supported, both at country level and perhaps at company level as well," he added.
Eng. Sakanya also acknowledged the commitment of fire officers, including volunteers who balance firefighting responsibilities with other duties but remain ready to respond whenever called upon.
He emphasised that teamwork, preparedness and professionalism are essential in safeguarding communities, workplaces and critical national infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Zambia Council of Chief Fire Officers Chairperson Robert Mumba Seulu commended Mopani Copper Mines for its continued support of the Council and its commitment to strengthening fire safety initiatives.
Mr. Seulu revealed that this year's Annual General Meeting marks the first time in the Council's history that the event is being hosted by a mining company instead of a local authority.
"We have come here to host the Zambia Council of Chief Fire Officers Meeting with a mining company as the host for the first time in history. All along it has been hosted by local authorities," Mr. Seulu said.
He thanked Mopani for consistently supporting the Council's activities, noting that the company has regularly sponsored its meetings and contributed to advancing the fire service sector in Zambia.
Mr. Seulu added that the partnership between the mining industry and fire services is important in strengthening emergency preparedness and promoting a strong culture of safety.
