LUSAKA – President Hakainde Hichilema has paid tribute to former Vice President and Acting President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, describing him as one of Zambia's noblest sons whose life was defined by selfless service, humility and an unwavering commitment to national unity.
In a message following Dr. Scott's passing, President Hichilema said despite having opportunities to build a life abroad after studying at some of the world's leading universities, Dr. Scott chose to return home and dedicate his life to serving Zambia.
Born in Livingstone, then Northern Rhodesia, Dr. Scott studied at Cambridge, Sussex and Oxford before returning to Zambia, where he served as a farmer, economist, Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister, Vice President and later Acting President.
President Hichilema praised Dr. Scott's leadership during one of Zambia's most challenging periods, saying he helped safeguard the country's Constitution and preserve national peace and stability.
"During one of our nation's most difficult moments, he provided calm, safeguarded our Constitution and helped preserve our peace," President Hichilema said.
The Head of State said Dr. Scott believed in the principle of "One Zambia, One Nation," adding that he judged people by their character rather than their race, ethnicity or background.
President Hichilema urged Zambians to honour Dr. Scott's legacy by promoting peace, unity and national cohesion, particularly as the country prepares for the upcoming General Election.
"As we approach the General Election, let us honour his memory by rejecting division, embracing peace and placing Zambia above ourselves, just as he did," he said.
The President concluded his tribute by expressing gratitude for Dr. Scott's contribution to the nation.
"Rest in eternal peace, Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott. The nation you loved will forever honour your legacy."
Dr. Guy Scott served as Zambia's Vice President from 2011 to 2014 and became the country's Acting President in 2014 following the death of President Michael Sata.
