GOVT WARNS AGAINST ABUSING FREEDOM OF SPEECH AS CAMPAIGNS INTENSIFY
By Nelson Zulu
Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo has cautioned stakeholders in the country against abusing freedom of speech as political campaigns intensify.
Mr. Matembo says while the constitution guarantees the right to express oneself freely, that right must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.
He tells Phoenix News that citizens must respect the rights and dignity of others, warning that provocation, false accusations and defamatory remarks can cross the line and create unnecessary conflict.
Mr. Matembo also emphasized that individuals who make allegations must be prepared to substantiate them when called upon by law enforcement agencies and stated that such processes should not be mistaken for harassment.
He has since urged all stakeholders to remain factual, disciplined and respectful in their public statements, saying mutual respect is key to maintaining peace and order during the campaign period.
