LUSAKA - President Hakainde Hichilema has announced that government plans to upgrade Chipata District Hospital into a fully-fledged General Hospital to improve access to specialised healthcare services in Eastern Province.
Speaking during a campaign rally in Chipata, President Hichilema said the upgrade would help reduce the need for patients to travel long distances in search of specialised medical treatment.
Beyond healthcare, the President announced plans to widen the Great East Road in Chipata to ease congestion and improve the movement of goods and services along one of Zambia's busiest transport corridors.
"We are voting for the UPND so that we can widen the Great East Road from the welcome sign to the Central Business District so that our vehicles can move freely," President Hichilema said.
He also revealed that construction works on the long-awaited Chipata-Lundazi Road would commence.
On energy development, President Hichilema said the 100-megawatt Chipata West Solar Power Project, which is currently about 50 percent complete, would be finalised to improve electricity supply in the province.
The President further pledged to improve sewer and sanitation systems in Chipata to protect underground water sources and enhance public health.
In agriculture, he assured farmers that government would continue supporting the sector through programmes such as the expansion of the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).
President Hichilema urged residents of Eastern Province to support the UPND in the forthcoming general election, saying the party had delivered development during its four years in government and remained committed to improving the lives of Zambians.
