LUSAKA - The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) has called on the UPND government to use its second term in office to address key concerns in strategic sectors of the economy, with particular focus on the mining sector.
CTPD Executive Director Isaac Mwaipopo said the government should enhance the integration of artisanal and small-scale miners into the broader mining value chain, citing the sector's potential to create jobs and drive economic growth.
Speaking in an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mwaipopo said the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining activities should be expedited and accompanied by education and technical support to help miners improve their operations.
He explained that access to appropriate equipment is also critical to enable smaller mining operators to participate meaningfully in mining activities and benefit from the country's mineral resources.
Mr. Mwaipopo further urged the government to build on efforts by institutions such as the Zambia Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Mines to create platforms that make it easier for small-scale mining operators to formalise their operations and contribute to national revenue.
