LUSAKA - Former Cabinet Minister Dr. Joseph Katema has died in India, where he had travelled to receive specialized medical treatment.
Government confirmed the death through Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, who announced that Dr. Katema passed away today while undergoing treatment.
"The Government of the Republic of Zambia regrets to inform members of the public of the death of Hon. Dr. Joseph Katema, Former Cabinet Minister in the Patriotic Front Government," Mr. Kangwa said.
Dr. Katema, a medical doctor turned politician, served in several key Cabinet portfolios under the Patriotic Front (PF) administration.
He served as Minister of Community Development, Mother and Child Health from 2011 to 2014, before being appointed Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services between 2014 and 2015.
He later served as Minister of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs from 2015 to 2016, after which he was appointed Zambia's Ambassador to Italy.
Before entering active politics, Dr. Katema built a distinguished career in the medical profession, a background that later saw him entrusted with leading the country's health sector at Cabinet level.
Government has announced that the funeral gathering is being held at House Number 736, Street 2, Meanwood Vorna Valley in Chongwe District.
Mr. Kangwa said funeral and burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
