LUSAKA - The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has cautioned against interpreting the recent decline in the cost of living in Lusaka as clear evidence that Government policies or the broader economy have fully improved.
Speaking to Phoenix News, ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala said the reduction in the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket from K12,112 in June to K11,698 in July is a positive development but should be viewed with caution.
Mr. Sakala said the decline may reflect improved supply conditions and some level of microeconomic stability rather than a sustained improvement in the overall economy.
He noted that a single month’s reduction does not necessarily indicate a long-term trend, adding that many households continue to struggle with high living costs as incomes remain below the amount required to meet basic needs.
Mr. Sakala further observed that the current minimum wage remains below the JCTR Basic Needs Basket, meaning many workers are still unable to afford the minimum cost of living for an average family.
He urged stakeholders to monitor trends over a longer period before concluding that the economy has fully recovered.
