LUSAKA - The Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) says there is nothing wrong with nurses attending President Hakainde Hichilema's campaign rallies in the hope of securing employment.
Speaking to Phoenix News, ZUNMO President Fray Michelo said there are no legal restrictions preventing nurses from attending political campaign events.
Mr. Michelo said, like members of other professions, nurses are seeking employment opportunities and are taking advantage of the President's recruitment pledges made during the campaign.
He thanked President Hichilema for considering the recruitment of volunteer nurses, describing the initiative as beneficial to Zambia's healthcare system.
Meanwhile, Mr. Michelo supported the President's call for nurses to refrain from using mobile phones while on duty, saying excessive use of the devices can endanger patients' lives if it distracts healthcare workers from their responsibilities.
He acknowledged that mobile phones can serve as useful reference tools in patient care but stressed that they should not be used in ways that compromise professional duties or violate the medical profession's code of ethics.
